Department of Pharmaceutics
Pharmaceutics is the branch of pharmacy that deals with the process of converting a active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) or in other word medicament into a treatment that patients may use safely and efficiently. It is also known as dosage form design science. Many compounds have pharmacological capabilities, but they require particular procedures to produce therapeutically relevant quantities at their areas of action. Pharmaceutics is concerned with the relationship between drug formulation and drug delivery and disposition in the body. Pharmaceutics is the science of converting a pure drug material into a dosage form. Pharmaceutics branches include:
• Pharmaceutical formulation
• Pharmaceutical manufacturing
• Dispensing pharmacy
• Physical pharmacy
• Jurisprudence in pharmaceuticals etc
Pure drugs are often white crystalline or amorphous powders. Historically, before the introduction of medicine as a science, pharmacists would distribute pharmaceuticals as it is; today, most drugs are provided as portions of a dosage form. The clinical performance of medications is determined by how they are presented to the patient.
